SAA Artist of the Year 2024 Finalist

Yesterday I learned that I had been selected as a finalist for SAA’s 2024 ‘Artist of the Year’ competition in the wildlife category. The competition is now in it’s 30th year, and I am honoured to be nominated for the second year in a row!

The piece that has been selected is ‘London Calling’. This piece is a later addition to my 'Urban Animals' collection, which is a series of paintings linking human environments to the natural world.

When considering the relationship between wildlife and urban spaces, pigeons encapsulate how we have shaped the lives of animals around our built environment. I wanted to celebrate the often-ignored beauty of the bird, emphasising the range of whimsical colours found in their plumage, bringing a pop of colour into the heart of our cities. In contrast, the skyline and rainy weather of London is represented in the collaged newspaper elements in the background.

Final results will be announced in 5 days, but regardless of the outcome, I am thrilled to have been named a finalist for the second year in a row. All of the finalist artworks will be displayed in October at the Nottingham Society of Artists’ Gallery. I cannot wait to see the show- definitely not one to miss!

Competition announcements will be made at https://www.saa.co.uk/artists-of-the-year/
