'Forest Dweller'

£500.00

‘Forest Dweller’, 2023, 76 x 51 x 4cm.

Mixed media on canvas, including: Oil paint, acrylic paint, spray paint, acrylic ink, oil pastel, brusho pigment powders, texture paste, gesso

For this series I've taken inspiration from British wildlife and explored their relationship with our built up environment, contrasting angular shapes against the beauty of nature.

I've always found deer so majestic, and have been lucky enough to grow up in Surrey with so much lush greenery. In this painting I wanted to bring together the bright hopeful spring greens with a more grounded, cooler green that to me evokes memories of a shaded canopy of leaves in the forest.

When I'm painting, I usually listen to music and let intuition take over when it comes to adding decorative flourishes and bold brush strokes. The marks radiating from the deer are sparks of energy and remnants of a dynamic creative process.

I take inspiration from street art and combine it with classical oil painting to create my own style. I build up layers of textured ground, acrylic, inks, and spray paint to create a piece that you need to touch to fully experience it. There's something special about handmade work that you can touch when we're all so consumed with screens! I then use oil paints to paint the animal, and develop it further with oil pastels. My paints are lightfast, and are sealed with a coat of matte spray varnish with UV protection, so my work will stand the test of time.
