'Two for Joy'

£1,320.00

’Two for Joy’, 2022. Unframed size: 100 x 120 x 4cm

Mixed Media on canvas including: oil paint, acrylic paint, spray paint, acrylic ink, oil pastel, texture paste, gesso

I am interested in the relationship between humans and animals- how our manmade environment impacts the wildlife around us, and vice versa. I wanted the piece to convey energy, and to bring together elements of nature, chaos, structure, and tension.

I count magpies religiously, according to the superstitious tale (one for sorrow, two for joy), so this piece had a special significance to me when I was creating it. To me, magpies are a symbol of fate and freedom.

Pairs are echoed throughout this painting- there are two of each element to create a sense of balance and harmony. The dark to light transition which cuts diagonally across the canvas helps to further the feeling of motion and flight.

'Two for Joy' combines a variety of media, which I feel creates a vibrant and energetic piece full of life. I thoroughly enjoy the layering process, and build my pieces from back to front. I started by creating a textured background, which I then paint into to recreate a graffiti-ridden wall. The bright pops of spray paint are there to direct the eye around the page in an angular motion. I carefully build up layers of both acrylic and oil paint to achieve radiant colours. With the right lighting, the colours seem so fluorescent that they come alive.

Recently featured as a full page in Artist Talk Magazine and on display at he Holy Art Gallery, London.
